"Joanie’s Jig"

"The Portland Collection: Contra Dance Music in the Pacific Northwest"
Susan Songer & Clyde Curley, 1997
ISBN: 0-9657476-0-3

http://www.theportlandcollection.com/

Notes, page 250:

"Joanie’s Jig ~ This is one of the ‘solidest’ dance jigs I know, written by Nancy Martin of Vancouver, Washington. Nancy and Bill Martin have been playing music together, in bands (including ‘Spud Mountain’), and with friends for years, focusing mostly on old-time music. They host(ed) a monthly jam session at their home, with Nancy’s fiddle and banjo and Bill’s guitar right at the center of things. They are among the stalwarts of the traditional music scene in the greater Portland-Vancouver area (Pacific Northwest)."

& from "The Fiddler’s Companion" ~ Andrew Kuntz

“Joanie’s Jig”

" ~ the jig was composed for - Joan Hathaway, who played piano and whistle in various bands with the Martins."

A loss to many, Nancy died from cancer this Autumn, 2005, a result of that addiction that many are damned with, tobacco. She is still there with some of us being a pest when we step out of line and I an hear her swearin’ now and telling me to lay off…

Here’s some of her inspiration as it had it’s way with me:

"Wakin’ Nancy"
jig

"Dancin’ Nancy"
mazurka

I had to give this some time, first seeking the OK to post it. Bill Martin survives Nancy and carries on the tradition. His website is a pleasant pastime and if you’re in the area there are some great sessions and dances to take in, something for just about anyone…

Oops! ~ almost forgot the other way with it ~

I gave this as it came to me just now, but there are simpler and different versions you’ll find in the before mentioned collection and various others online in ABC format, etc. Here’s another take of it:

Correction, all of the "Joanie’s Jig" abc’s and dots I checked online were actually for the Bob McQuillen tune…not nearly as nice as Nancy’s… 😉

More often than not, that fifth bar of the B-part of this tune I do a bit of microtonal ticklin’, loosely something like this, with the fifth note, *f , being between an f# and a g natural:

| ^f=f^f g*fg |

I’ve started playing this one like this:

X: 1
T: Joanie’s
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
R: jig
K: Dmaj
DEF EFG|FAd ~f3|gec Ace|dAG FGE|
DEF EFG|FAd ~f3|gec ABc|1 edc dAF:|2 edc d2g||
|:~f3 ~g3|afd Adf|gec Ace|dAG FAd|
fdf gb^g|afd Adf|gec ABc|1 edc d2g:|2 edc dAF||

And then it transformed itself into a reel https://thesession.org/tunes/6053.

"Joanie’s Jig" ~ some other ways with it

~ I tend to play it with a second ending…

Repeatedly I’ve forgotten to return that ^e to =e…

Hey Dow, yes, I meant to say I liked and like some of what you’ve done with it… 😉
