This appears on a Matt Molloy album. I’m not quite sure if he wrote it or not…I’ll have to look into that.

Stony Steps by Matt Molloy is in G, not D.
Sorry.

Stony steps in “D”

Sorry, Gian Marco - that’s not correct. "Stony Steps" is actually the 2nd tune in the set of 3 reels. They got the order of tunes wrong on the sleeve notes. Molloy plays it in D - (albeit on an Eb flute).

Wrong steps in “D”

Thanks, Kenny.

Dunno if this set came from any specific recording, but around my home, they frequently play this tune after Maids of Mt Kisco. Makes for a fun little set.

This next one I’ve simplified quite a bit and taken out some of the ornamentation e.g. same-note triplets.

I just heard this one on the Réalta album, noticed that it was the Stoney Steps - a tune which name I recognize, and somehow associate with Matt Molloy but still haven’t learned properly (or at all). Yet it sounds annoyingly familiar, and I don’t even have one single recording of the 31 (!) mentioned (OK, there is a tape of the black album somewhere, but it still sunds more familiar that it should, compared the low number of times I’ve listened to the tape).

Where have I heard it? Somewhere else?
