This tune, from the pen of Cillian Vallely, comes from Lunasa’s fine new recording “Se”. There’s a lot of drive in this tune!

A very nice tune, I will say. What exactly does “Leckan Mór” mean, anyways?

Leckan More

Most likely a placename : An Leacain Mhór is a townland up in Co Down

See database of placenames in Ireland: http://www.logainm.ie

Cillian wrote that is is named after a place in the Mourne mountains that was overlooked by Leckan Mor and Leckan Beag. Somewhere near Rostrevor, Co.Down.

I like the “strathspey-ish” taste given by the crotchet / quaver of the second setting ! It has been found at https://sites.google.com/site/veryslowsessions/tunes-1/lockan-mor under the mis-spelled name of “Lockan Mór”.
I don’t know the original version of Lunasa but played very slowly, I suppose it could have been a waltz…

Re: Leckan Mor

This tune was written by Cillian and named after a house he lived in for a while in Rostrevor and the house itself is called Leckan Mór. I was written for friend Liam Baxter from Rostrevor who would be a friend of the Valelly Family. Liam is great supporter of Culture and Arts in south Down and is an absolute gentleman!
