Woodcock

I noted that someone posted the details for Hammy Hamilton’s recording “Moneymusk”. Well he wrote the two jigs on that album, Woodcock and Kerfunten and I note that The Session has the music for the Kerfunten but not Woodcock. SO I have rectified that. Please note that Deanta also have a really nice recording of these two jigs together on one of their albums. They do make a nice set together.
Enjoy.

I was trying to work out this out from the Deanta version (before I noticed it was on The Session) and had got hold of the hn-jig-170 via ABC Tune Finder. I was frustrated at how different the HN version is from Deanta’s playing. Here’s my heavily amended version (very similar as it turns it to the version posted here). I’ve put in some basic chords, but if anybody has any suggestions for anything more sophisticated please let me know

It’s a really great tune.

I need to update my old edition of his “The Irish Flute Player’s Handbook” - to the new & improved:
http://hamiltonflutes.com/The_Irish_Flute_Players_Handbook.html

~ and I’ll have to put his DVD “Wooden Flute Maintenance” on my Christmas wish list:

Bless him for putting in the time toward this good cause…

Re: The Woodcock

Below is a link to The Woodcock as played by Hammy Hamilton. He says that the main thing that people get wrong is that they play high D in the 4th bar. He says to be sure to play the low D.
On the second part he says he plays it mostly as the first time on the recording, but sometimes uses a variation on the d e f g.

I am not familiar with writing out tunes in ABC. Maybe someone would want to take a go at it?

The Woodcock, X:6

This is a transcription of the recording that Bill C posted of Hammy playing the tune. He plays it once slowly, with fewer rolls, and then plays it a bit faster with a few more ornaments. I’ve mostly transcribed his first time through, but added a couple of the rolls from the second time through.

The Woodcock, X:7

Fiddler Seamus Creagh, who lived near Skibbereen in Co. Cork, played a variation on the B part that is just different enough I thought it worth including. Having first heard this bright and playful melody from his playing, it was the B part in particular that especially grabbed my attention.
