“The Shelf”

I’m sure this was requested a while back. This comes from the playing of Desi Wilkinson & Gerry O’Connor. Desi got the tune from fiddlers Charlie and Paddy O’Neill. A particular favourite with Northern flute players, going right up to the high “d” in places.
There’s a slightly different version on the new “Teada” CD, which I’ll post in “Recordings” later.

Nice to see this here… “Cosa gan Bhroga” is a great recording, lovely music…

I played this at the 2001 All Ireland - to great effect - on the mandolin.
Mind you I had had 6 weeks in hospital practice it and even Gerry said well done when I came off the stage. !!
Himself and Mártín O’Connor played it in concerts, followed by another Northern polka we got from The Rose. (O’Connor - Dundalk)

It’s GREAT fun as a solo but I’ve never had a chance to try it in a session so I’m REALLY pleased to see it here. Well done whoever….

I’m off to the Fleadh (Munster) in Lismore 2ml distant to have another bash at the All Ireland. Wish me luck my competetion starts in 2 mins.

I love playing this as the ‘barndance’ it is, with swing and not so manic, in other words laid-back… 😎

Shelf #2?

I first heard this tune at a late-night session a few years ago while attending Irish Week at the Swannanoa Gathering. John Skelton was playing a blazing set of tunes with another player (can’t recall his name, but I seem to recall that he is the nephew of Mairead ni Mhaonidh of Altan.) The next day in class I asked John what the tune was and he said it was the Shelf and said he learned it from a Skylark recording called Raining Bicycles. I’ve been unable to find that recording, but I did find it on a compilation cd called Come Dance With Me In Ireland. They play this tune as a medley, bookending it around another polka. Can anyone outh there tell me the name of that tune?

Desi ,Gerry on “Youtube”

There’s a good recording of this on “Youtube” - Desi, Gerry and Brendan Hearty on guitar. Search for “Steeple Sessions 2011” - it’s listed as “Part 3”

Re: The Shelf

The tune that Skylark plays with The Shelf Polka on their 1996 album Raining Bicycles is “The Ballyoran Polka” (only nine years after the request above was made!).
