“I Looked East and I Looked West” / “Paddy Scanlon’s Polka”

Here’s a similar transcription of the tune taken from the fiddling of Martin Mulvihill’s (Limerick/U.S.A.):

“I Looked East and I Looked West” from Taxi Mauve

This from Taxi Mauve, I’m not sure how to add stocatto to the notes, but in measures 3 and 4, the second and fourth notes get bit off short, as if you were saying "do it, do it, do it, do it". Same in the B part, but not as pronounced. This in the A part is a nice figure that sets the character of the tune when played like this.

as an alternative, 2nd measure as |FAD B/A/| and 6th measure as |FAD A/B/|. These add a really nice bop to the flow, and actually increase the speed possible on a mandolin.

I Looked East And I Looked West/Paddy Scanlon’s

Paddy Scanlon was a flute player in the parish of Glin (Limerick) with whom Martin Mulvihill played frequently in his youth, and it was from Scanlon that he learned this polka (sleeve notes).

I’d also picked this up, among versions, from another Limerick flute player, John Joe Harnett, who, with everything else, had a load of polkas and slides traditional to the area…
