Five comments

From Planxty "Words & Music". Liner notes attribute it to the 16th century composer William Byrd and a collection called "My Ladye Nevells Book of Virginal Music". It’s part of a suite called "The Battell" and likely influenced by a clan march.
I’ve been totally stymied trying to figure out those 16th notes by ear, and finally found the tune online today. I’m playing it on whistle but I dare say it should be a challenge and excellent practice on any instument. The CD is in perfect tune with my whistle and by tomorrow I should be able to play all the way through at speed if my wife hasn’t stuck a grapefruit in my mouth after listening to the same thing for too many (to her) boring hours!

You’ll never hear it in a session, but this is nice tune and a demonstration that Liam O Flynn can match the speed demons note for note and chops for chops - when he wants to.

On yer mate

Good on yer for posting this. I play this in a duo with a guitarrist to give it at least some currency in my home town ( Brisbane Australia).

It has a grand regal feel to it, and deserves to be played more

Fourth bar from the end…

has a C natural marked, when all Cs are already natural. Perhaps that was meant as a C sharp?
