Identity theft?

Curiously enough, Frankie Gavin’s Frankie Goes to Town has a track he calls, "The Maid Behind the Barrel" . It is in Em, of course tuned up to Fm as is Frankie’s preference.
The liner notes even say it it sometimes called "Kiss The Maid Behind the Barrel".
It is quite different from this tune, a great new version of which is on Danu’s "All Things Considered"
Anybody else rune into this?

Pipe standard tune

I learnt this tune in a pipe lesson (intermediate level) at the Willy weel in Milltown Malbay.
The tune was used to show us to have lot of g roll practice…
It was about this version and under this name. I think it is a Seamus Ennis tune.

Another recording

Also check out The Mountain Road, a collection of South Sligo musicians. This tune is the first tune on that album.

Another recording

check out Noel Hill’s version on his solo album " The Irish Concertina".

Don’t do think this tune is a version of Steampacket? Or maybe this one came first.

Sorry, I just want to say "Don’t you think…?" Also compare this one with Trim the Velvet.

Kissing maids behind stuff

Here’s the ABCs for a piper’s version that would have all the rolls urs is talking about. It might be Paddy Keenan’s version, it’s from a tape someone gave me of stuff that was on the radio years ago and it sounds like him playing. Also, it can’t be Seamus Ennis’ tune, as urs suggests, because it shows up in O’Neill’s — which was published at the turn of the 20th Century. Seamus Ennis was born in 1919.

Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel - Peadar O’Loughlin’s setting

I heard Maeve Donnelly And Peadar O’Loughlin on Clare fm discussing their "older" settings for tunes on their recording, "The Thing Itself." Here’s the abcs for Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel based on that recording. I find it very enjoyable to play on flute.

There’s nothing to beat Mick Mulvey’s flute version on "Within a Mile of Jamestown"

…IMHO!

Parts 1 and 2 are the same as the tune "Steampacket" (also know as Sporting Paddy). The other two parts I’ve never heard before. I’ll listen to Noel Hill’s version again and see if it matches this one.

The Steampacket also known as Sporting Paddy? I’m puzzled.

By the way, I’ve been playing the Steampacket as an easy substitute, but I really have to learn this in a couple of weeks. (Actually the first two parts are not exactly the same as the Steampacket.) I heard it played 2 or 3 times while I was travelling around in GB & NI quite recently. Definitely one of classic flute tunes often associated with John McKenna. Cathal McConnell recorded on his first album, Paul McGrattan did with Paul O’Shaughnessy, and Peadar O’Loughlin recently did with Maeve Donnelly. Thanks Jack for their transcription.

*the* transcription of their version.

Is this related to Trim the Velvet?

Splitting The Already- Split Hair…(Sliabh Luachra Version 2.0)

Got this setting from Kerry box player Paudie O’Connor’s collaboration with piper John O’Brien (Mick’s younger brother) entitled "Wind & Reeds". Paudie says in the notes that he got this from fiddler Denis Murphy, hence the prefix I attached to the title:

I thought it was different enough from enirehtac’s posting to include it here. Also, a helpful (hopefully) hint for our friend enirehtac (and anybody else posting ABC’s here): PLEASE write the ABC’s out four (4) measures per line. It prints out much nicer that way (& it’s a lot easier to read!). Thanks!

-Jay

Josephine Keegan has it as…

Fair Haired Kate, set (just for fun) in G dorian — reel #68 in her 2004 tunebook A Drop in the Ocean.
