The Cry Of The Joyce

This is a beautiful tune dating back to 1792 and was collected by Bunting. Liam O’Flynn plays a lovely version of this tune, and is worth a listen if you want to play this tune. Like with all slow airs the dots are a guide, and you really should listen to a good player to hear the phrasing of the melody.

The tune is to be found on the CD ‘A Given Note’ by Liam O’Flynn

The transcription here is 6/8, so ignore the 3/4 time signature.

I submitted the tune in 6/8 but it was changed by the time the sheet music appeared. Not sure why that happened.

I think I worked out why, I submitted the tune as a waltz as there is no category of air. I have changed the ABC now.

An Speic Seoigheach

This air is recorded by the Chieftains (8) under the title An Speic Seoigheach and said to be by Paddy Moloney who must therefore be much older than he looks to have been able to pass the tune onto Edward Bunting in the 1790s

Re: The Cry Of The Joyce

In reply to birlibirdie’s request as to the Irish in Bunting’s first collection, it is “Speic Seoig[h]ac,” and the source from which the Chieftains have the name of the tune.
