Twenty-one comments

The Tune

One of mine that just came out of nowhere today. My 12 year old son and I were getting ready to play a few tunes today and I said… "you take that chair" and then I said "Ill take this chair… the fiddler’s chair."

It’s nice! For me there’s not enough repetition in the phrases for it to hang together as a single reel though, and when I played it through it naturally came together as a double. Maybe I’m just not getting it, but here’s how I played it:

X: 1
T: Fiddler’s Chair, The
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Gmaj
~B2Ac BG~G2|DEFG ABcA|GEED ~E3d|edBG A2GA|
~B2Ac BG~G2|DEFG ABcA|GEED ~E2Bd|1 edBA ~G2A:|2 edBA ~G3d||
|:edef gage|gage dBBA|G2 (3BAG Bd~d2|edBG A2Bd|
edef gage|gage dBBA|GABG Bd~d2|1 edBA ~G3d:|2 edBA ~G3A||

That last G of the 1st time thru the A part I should have written as ~G3.

Dow

Thanks for the comments. I orginally thought it should be a double but posted it as a single for simplicity. I really like your arrangement and feel that you captured the essence of the tune. I would probably play it as a double and similar to what you posted. (but with less ornamentation) I am not one to play anything the same way twice and I enjoy playing with ending phrases, so I I think what you did with it is fantastic. So I’d say you got it.

This tune was not work at all to compose, It just came to me and I thought it was a keeper. I posted hoping at least one person would enjoy it… otherwise I might forget it!

I just tried it again today, and I could remember it after only playing it through a couple of times yesterday. I really love it. It’s worth sifting through all the crap here in the tunes section to find gems like this. I’d love to try and introduce it to the people at my session.

Thanks.

I sincerely appreciate your comments… Feel free to play it and share it with others.

“The Fiddler’s Settle” (settee)

Damn guys, ease up on the treacle, I prefer it as a single, and there’s nothing stopping a second ending on the short back and sides of it:

R: single reel
K: G Major
|: Ac |
B/B/B Ac BG E/F/G | DE E/F/G ABcA | GE E/E/E DE E/E/E | edBG A/B/A :|
|: B/c/d |
e/e/e d/e/f gage | g/a/g eg edBA | G2 (3BAG dG B/c/d |[1 edBG A2 :|[2 edBA G2 ||

What ‘crap’? 😏

Dow has written me chastising me for not crediting the endings I used to him… hmmmmmm…. 😏

Funny that, I don’t see me laying on the Ggggsss like he does, does anyone else see it?

Dow’s endings:

[1 edBA ~G2A:|2 edBA ~G3d||
[1 edBA ~G3d:|2 edBA ~G3A||

& mine:

| GE E/E/E DE E/E/E | edBG A/B/A :|
[1 edBG A2 :|[2 edBA G2 ||

Oh, it’s there, that very last measure, hmmmm… 😎 πŸ˜‰ 😎

I don’t mind you plagiarising my work, ‘c’.

I still think it works better as a double. I’m sure there’s a way to make it work as a single, I just don’t think your way is it! πŸ˜›

I see you are up late again Mr. D?

Yes, for 3 main reasons:

1) I don’t have to work tomorrow,
2) Mosquitos keep buzzing round my ears and waking me up, and
3) I just upgraded to Norton Antivirus 2007 and it won’t download properly, and I can’t get Word to load up and I wasted hours on it yesterday and today and about an hour ago I was ready to throw the bloody thing out the window, I was so angry and frustrated, so I decided to netsurf for a bit and drink some whiskey and now I feel much better.

But back to the tune. Maybe the way to make it into a good single would be to make a fling of it first and then take it from there, but then it ends up sounding like a different tune:

I’m back ~ I like it… I think the idea of taking it into a swing and making a fling of it is a great way to work on helping to push it in the direction of a good single reel. That was fun. I enjoyed following that and playing along… Thanks… It took my mind off the fact I burnt the hell out of my lip, and burnt some of what I had in the oven too. I knew better. I had some left over batter and just threw it into Yorkshire pudding molds and it was half the thickness of the main, and then, knowing I should have tossed it in halfway through the baking time, I slid it into the bottom. Well, the bottoms were burnt. As I was slicing it up while it was warm I stupidly put the knife between my lips, which are not burnt and raw. See how distracted I get. I was singing this when it happened. I don’t know whether to try to cast the blame your way or MH’s? πŸ™
