Part swapping!

Hi, I wrote this tune for my sister Laura a long time ago.
The version posted here is actually backwards… It is starting with the B part. Will post the original version once I find out how!!

Chords to reel

In a few weeks, at my church, we have a little "talent night" spiel at my youth group, and I decided to do something with my friend James, who’s a fiddler. I’m mostly doing guitar, but I can’t quite get what chords to use in a particular tune. Can anybody tell me at least the basic chords that Lunasa uses in their version of a Phil Cunningham’s tune, "Laura Lynn Cunningham"?

This would be a big help to me,
Thanks, and God bless

Re: Chords to reel

This is from Donogh’s book:

Bm A Bm / | Em A | Bm | F#m A |

/ G / D | A F#m7 | F#msus4 | / / Bm / |

Bm | Em A / Bm | F#m A | G D |

A F#m7 | F#msus4 | F#msus4 Bm ||

Bm A | D A | Bm | F#m7 A |

Bm A | D A | Bm A | F#m Bm |

Bm A | D A | Bm | F#m7 A |

Gmaj7add9 F#m 7 | E D | F#msus4 | / / Bm ||

Chords hit on the 1 and 3 except where I’ve put the forward slashes.

Re: Chords to reel

Think you could show me where that would go in the tune?

Re: Chords to reel

That is, put in the ABC, or copy it from this site, and show where the chords would go? This doesn’t seem to tell me much of where to play the chords, unless I just have trouble understanding simple things.

Re: Chords to reel

I’m not good with abc’s but I’d be willing to tune your guitar for you. :0)

Re: Chords to reel

Play the tune on your CD player and listen to it. Your ears will tell you how to play the chords and where to make the chord changes.

I am not familiar with the tune, but it’s very possible that Lunasa plays in DADGAD; the chords sound very different in DADGAD.

Re: Chords to reel

The vertical lines between the chord names are the bar lines, exactly as in the music and ABC.
Assuming your fiddler is playing from either of these, write the chord names under the music, lining up with the bar lines. Then he can tell you which bar he is on.
You might need a bit of practice to get up to speed.
Or possibly a simpler tune or arrangement ?

Re: Chords to reel

I know the tune well enough to hum it, but what’s here doesn’t seem to fit quite right to me, but I’ll listen to it again.

I think Lunasa’s original guitarist, Donogh Hennessy plays in DADGBD

Re: Chords to reel

Maybe I should just buy their tunebook?

Re: Chords to reel

Yes, buy their book, give them a bit more money, they deserve it.
BUT; also remember that how a tune appears when written never gives the full extent of how it is played, even allowing for errors of transmission, and if you also don’t have their own notation for the tune, you may well be currently trying to play from a very dissimiler version.

Re: Chords to reel

The version posted in the tune section is reversed ("B" section first), and Lunasa does a variation of the "A" section rather than repeat (hence the chords as written in Donough’s book in my original post), but the chords are basically the same. Here’s the abc w/chords. Not perfect (I just did this in about 10 minutes and didn’t really check it over for accuracy), but close enough for horseshoes ;-)

BTW, about the chords posted earlier:

The pipe, "|", separates the measures
Two pipes, "||", signifies the end of a section
A forward slash represents one beat

So, in a 4/4 tune a bar written like this, "| D A |" means the "D" hits on the one and the "A" on the three os the measure.

A measure written like this, "| / / Bm |", means the "Bm" is played on the third beat (obviously the last chord from the measure before is played through beats one and two.

The opening measure is "Bm A Bm / | " which means "Bm" on beat one, "A" on beat two and "Bm" on beats three and four.

…and the beat goes on

BTW, I’m a Pagan! 8-)

I think I’ve got it down now, though, unless I’m playing with the recording, those 7th and suspended chords don’t seem right, and the E chord too.

Timing

There’s something wrong here with the timing of the tune, in the sheet music version in bars 5 and 11 there are only 3 and a half beats… and no rests. I’m trying to figure out what it should be but not that easy, haven’t been playing for very long. Anyone have any ideas??

Timing

Pol, the fifth bar is usually the same as the first, and the crochet should be dotted in the 11th.

What is "ABC"?
I’m brazillian and, here, we say "cifra" to a conjunction of chords… So, I think that "ABC" is the same. I’m right?

This tune gets around!

What is unmistakeably this tune (with the parts in the other order, as was noted they should be) shows up in David Taylor’s book "Music of Ireland: Where’s the Crack?" (Mallinson 1997) under the title Vincent Blin’s no. 2. Anyone know the story on this?

Laura Lynn Cunningham, X:4

This is the version I’ve learnt from sessions/CDs (including Blazin’ Fiddles, but not exclusively).

Parts in the right order (unlike setting #1!) and no chords to pollute the ABC (like #2 and #3!)

Phil’s version

Here is, I think, a version closest to Phil’s own, taking from Silly Wizard album "Wild and Beautiful" :

This transcription in the post above did not make it into the added settings for some reason, so I’ve taken the liberty of cutting & pasting it in.
