Wedding Day Jig

This is an awesome jig composed by Donnell Leahy and Natalie MacMaster. On the Leahy DVD he tells the audience it was written the night before their wedding as a "gift" to everyone who came to celebrate. It’s certainly a heck of a tune!

Thank You!!

Thank you for posting this tune… i’ve been trying to learn it ever since i first heard it… it is most decidedly a heck of a tune!!

Well..

Maybe I stand to be corrected, it says it’s in G Dorian, and I’m not acquainted with Dorians (I know I love the way they sound). I was just looking at the key signature.
Anybody care to educate me on a Dorian scale???

Re: Wedding Day

I’m not an authority on things modal but, a simple way to get Dorianism is to take a scale in a major key and play it as an 8-note sequence - but from the second note of the scale. Thus if you consider the notes in a C-major scale and start playing them up and down from D, you end up with D Dorian, which has two significant changes from a D major. The third is a semitone flat (F, not F#) and the 7th note is also a semitone flat (C, not C#). It sounds a bit D-minorish, but the B is natural, not flat (as it would be in a true D minor), and it’s probably this that gives the Dorian mode its flavour.

Thus G Dorian has the notes of the F major scale, but starting the sequence at G, and so on.

If I’m mistaken in this, I have no doubt that someone on the site will put me right.
