A fun hornpipe

with lots of room for variations.

This version is based on John Carty’s playing on Last Night’s Fun. If you have a chance, listen to that recording since no notation can even come close!
He actually does it in D minor, but some instruments don’t take that well to F naturals, so I took the liberty… 😉

Since I downloaded John Carty’s recording from eMusic a while ago, I don’t have any sleeve notes. So if somebody has some more info on this tune that would be great!

Tried to get this close to John Carty’s version on “Mirth Making Heros”. Em is a little easier for an old man on whatever’s tuned GDAE.

No idea why I can’t get MIDI to play correctly or where the mordents went. Had to use TablEdit to create the ABC file. I’m too hidebound to learn ABC properly.

So I plagiarized the mordents from Dancin’ Dick and stole how NFLDWhistler did the endings as well and when I put the mordents into this ABC, I saw some kindly saint had already fixed my endings and the MIDI playback for me as well. Thank you kindly saint and thanks NFLDWhistler for the use of your technique.

This is a version of ‘The Firth House’ from Kohler’s Violin Repository. It can also be found in Alastair Hardie’s Caledonian Companion and is played on the accompanying CD by Aly Bain. The original key is Bb/Gm
