Tie The Bonnet

Picked this up from a session at the National Folk Festival in Canberra this year. This is the tune that appears on Brian Rooney’s "The Godfather", and also Lunasa’s "Kinnitty Sessions". Another tune in O’Neill’s that goes by the same name https://thesession.org/tunes/136 is similar in the A-part but nevertheless a different tune.

“Tie the Bonnet” / “Easy and Slow” ~ rescued duplication

A nice slow reel I learnt a long time ago. I don’t know if it has another name.

Not the Tie the Bonnet on Maple Leaf or Comhaltas collection

Hey all,

I’m currently working on Tie the Bonnet as it appears in the Comhaltas Foinn Seisiun collection. It’s also the same tune on Jimmy Noonan’s Maple Leaf, but it’s NOT what’s posted here. What gives? Can some wiser member enlighten?

See "DrDow’s" initial comment above - he provides the link to the far more common version of the tune.

Tune origin

Tie the bonnet is an Irish version of the Scotch/border reel "I Had a Lass Till I Ran at Her", which appears on this site. The tune is likely to have been originally in A and for the pipes. It is in also in this key in O’Neill’s . The title probably means "Hold the Horse Still", though a double-entendre is possible.
