Scatter the Mud

I’ve been feeling this jig is too repetitive and boring to play, but I got in trance with it this afternoon. The version I picked up from Kevin Burke’s playing is:

eAA B2A|eAA ABd|eAA BAB|dBG GBd|
eAA B2A|eAA AGE|GAB dge|dBA A3:|
eaa egg|dBA ABd|eaa egg|dBG GBd|
eaf g2e|dBA AGE|GAB dge|dBA ABd:|

Eileen Ivers plays the similar one.

Emerald Rose version

Here’s how Emerald Rose plays it. Quite different, but nice.

Re: Emerald Rose version

Somewhat similar to Kevin Burke’s version. Especially the second part.

oops. First and fifth should be |ecA B2 A|

Neil Killeen’s (jig)

This tune resembles "The Lilting Banshee" transposed into Emin

I’m pretty certain this is just a version of scatter the mud and the noonday feast (already listed) in a different key, rather than the lilting banshee… …is it not?

Posted by .

yes, i wrote "lilting bashee" thinking to "scatter the mud"

and "bashee" instead of "banshee"

Must be because you saw the lilting banshee scatter the mud at the noonday feast ;)

Scatter the Mud question

I was listening to this (it’s amazing):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YVfKKCsF7k

and was wondering if anybody knew where there was sheet music for this version fo scatter the mud which has many more parts than the standard A minor 2 part one I hear at sessions. Does this tune in multi-part form have other names perhaps?

Re: Scatter the Mud question

Well IMHO it is ‘scatter the mud’ with a good few variations and a little playing about with the timing. I can’t really hear a separate third part.
I really like his playing and the reel which sounds to be ‘new mown meadows’ as stated on the site is a lovely session tune.

Re: Scatter the Mud question

Sounds like the regular two part Scatter the Mud to me.

Just learned this one today from banjo legend Brian McGrath. Great, simple tune.

I edited the tune to show ‘Scatter The Mud’ as the primary name for this tune. If this bothers anyone apparently it can be changed back just as easily.

This goes really good with the Lilting Banshee!

Scatter The Mud, X:7

I’ve heard some lovely performances of this old jig set in E dorian from the likes of Mirella Murray and Fiachra O’Regan—the latter just last night here in Nashville. This setting comes pretty straight from the solo box playing of Charlie Piggot on his wonderful recording with Gerry Harrington "The New Road". Note the alternate endings of the B part.
