The Reel of Sceach

This tune was written by Joun Brady, flute player from Offaly , Ireland in the late 70s. It can be heard on the Beauties of Autumn, the LP brought out by Comhaltas in 1983 featuring the Longridge ceili band.

the version here is not the original one!

The Irish title is pronounced “shcahogue” according to Attracta Brady, John Brady’s daughter. The original version of the tune should be appearing in the new Portland Collection that Susan Songer will be publishing soon.

didn’t blazin fiddles record this as ‘barneys balmoral’?

sorry forget i said that - i just meant didn’t they record this.

cheers

This tune is also the middle reel in the “Green Mountain” medley from the Dervish recording HARMONY HILL (also on LIVE IN PALMA). A very nice version, as is the one on the first Lunasa record, which tarts the tune up with some rather dramatic chord changes.

I do not know this version,
there is a diffrent version on Black velvet’s cd.
perhaps someone could post it…

Why don’t you post the “Black Velvet” tune yourself, if it’s not the same tune ? Siobhan has more than 1 tune associated with her name.
And to reply belatedly to “flaminfiddler”, no - “Blazin’ Fiddles” didn’t record this as “Barney’s Balmoral” - a different tune altogether, although now we’re stuck with it because some idiot has entered it as an alternative title.

as a matter of fact I am working on a transcrption already.

There is another version of this tune. Very Close to the first one but with nice ornamentations.

According to me, I prefer the First one. It gives a very good pulse of the tune.

Cheers

This tune meanders, meandering nicely, like the winter Shanonn through Offaly.

Joun Brady contact info

Hi, I’m recording an album with my friend next week and we’re putting this tune on it. Anyone know where I can find his contact info to ask permission and details on the royalty? Thanks.

Siobhan O’Donnell’s, X:10

This is a small variation on version X:1 as published here. Understandably, being in A the tune has become known in Scotland. John Brady was a flute player himself and the tune presents few problems for players of keyless flutes and whistles, only the last bar of each part having a G sharp which can be played by half covering the hole.
