Within a mile of Edinburgh

One of the first strathspeys I learnt. I came across it on the JC tunefinder site and an Alasdair Fraser recording.

Within a mile of Edinburgh Town

This tune is also used as the Regimental March of The Cameronians (The Scottish Rifles) A Regiment that is now dispanded. Played as a march of course.

Re: Within A Mile Of Edinburgh

It has words too: singing in strathspey rhythm is slightly tricky but can be done!

Re: Within A Mile Of Edinburgh

Actually a very old song: words originally “Within a Furlong of Edinborough Town” by Thomas D’Urfey (1653-1723), but later altered to “Within a Mile of Edinburgh Town”. Tune origin debated: maybe Henry Purcell, maybe Jeremiah Clarke? (Same debate over “Trumpet Voluntary”!)
