There’s a jig version of this tune here called, "The Humours of Drinagh" https://thesession.org/tunes/413

Ilen not Illen

The name is the banks of the Ilen, (pronounced eye len) not Illen, named after the river which runs through Skibbereen in Co. Cork.

Nmaes…

Why does this tune have 7 alternative names, with justification for none of them ?

The Banks of the Ilen:

with one ‘l’ only, it is the name of the river that runs through Skibbereen in West Cork where ‘stands’ of anglers can be spotted trying to catch a peal (a local word for ‘a young salmon on its first return from the sea’)
http://www.riverilen.com/river.htm
An Aighlinn: http://www.logainm.ie/

There seem to be v little ‘justification’ for tune titles on the whole, Kenny… There seem to be some local logic here as Cártaí is an other Cork sounding name and Sixmiletown isn’t far away, just north of the Shanon estuary, in Co Clare. Names can be entered anonymously, but this liberty has rarely been abused, it seems.

As for the various spellings they are justified because they help the automatic listing of ‘tunes recorded under such names’. eg; ‘Seanbhean Na GCarta’ leads to a Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh rendition of The Banks of the Ilen, etc.

More ‘Banks of the …’ tunes from the "Music of the Tatar People" CD; a rare collection of songs collected by Laszlo Vikar on the banks of the Volga; this other home of seán-nós!

Murphy/Clifford-ish

Trying to work out Denis Murphy/Julia Clifford’s version from Star Above the Garter….

The Banks Of The Ilen/Dillane’s

Martin Mulvihill recorded this under the title "Dillane’s" after fiddler Tom Dillane, from whom he learned the tune.

The Banks Of The Ilen/Dillane’s

I said, "Martin Mulvihill recorded this under the title "Dillane’s" after fiddler Tom Dillane, from whom he learned the tune…" Tried to delete it, but no go. It’s a different tune - sorry.

The Banks Of The Ilen/Dando Dillane’s

From sleeve notes: Martin Mulvihill recorded this under the title "Dando Dillane’s" after a flute player in the parish of Glin, Limerick. Dando was apparently one of the first musicians Martin heard playing that tune.
