Young Francis Mooney
Another tune from the playing of Jerry O’Sullivan, also featured on his CD The Gift.
It’s in Edor.
In that case slainte I presume those Cs are meant to be sharps - yes?
Yeah, that’s what I thought. Jack, please add more info on this tune for us, especially who J. O’Sullivan got it from.
The first part seems to be a variation of the Lannigan’s Ball Jig
Jerry got the tune from Seamus Connelly a fiddle player. Apparently Francis Mooney was the Grandson of the great Capt Francis O’Neil. It is transcribed in O’Neils in G Major.
I was just using Tunepal to identify mystery tunes from Peter Horan’s class at Goderich in 2001, and this jig came up. The setting is a good bit different in details but pretty clearly the same tune. I’m pretty sure it’s Peter playing, and I wouldn’t have expected him to have learned it from the Jerry O’Sullivan recording or O’Neill’s. Anyone know anything more about it? I’ll try to remember to post Peter’s setting once I’ve got it learned.
Young Francis Mooney, X:2
The setting from O’Neill’s 1001 (#123)
