Robbie Hannans’

An excellent piping reel from the master Robbie Hannan. You can hear a slight relationship to the tune ‘Flood On The Holme’ but this is a very different tune. A tune that deserves to be heard more.

Miss Rattray

That’s the original title for this Scots tune. "Flood on the Holm" includes it in the 3rd and 4th parts with some variation. https://thesession.org/tunes/1041 Robbie Hannan would cite J. Doherty as the source.

Robbie Hannans’

There is a passing similarity to ‘Stay Another While’. I don’t know how to link a tune but I believe this tune is on the data base.

Just worked it out

This is Miss Rattray

This is an old traditional Scottish tune I learned from Shetland fiddler Fionn MacArthur. It dates from the 1800’s or earlier.

This tune appears in ‘The Skye Collection’ first published 1887. This is pretty much the way it appears in the book. The tune you refer to is likely be a version of this rather than the other way round. It is in common with the syle of tune from that period whereas Robbie Hannan’s has a more modern arrangement.

Sorry Jack I missed your comment.

” Miss Rattray” ~ “The Skye Collection of the Best Reels & Strathspeys” ~ 1887

Compiled by Keith Norman MacDonald

Bogman’s transcript is basically copied from "The Skye Collection", page 34… The only difference are the lead-ins and that the B-part is fully written out, rather than as 1st and 2nd endings ~

As usual, "The Athole Collection", 1884, by James Stewart Robertson, has the identical transcription… An earlier publication of this was in "The Dance Music of Scotland", 1851, by J.T. Surrene…

“Miss Rattray” ~ another ‘duplication’, not really, the differences are significant

Here’s a rehash of this transcription, attributed to Robbie Hannah, but reduced to 16 measures and with a few fudges so that it can be compared to the above transcription ~

This and the reduced from given here, just seems all over the place and the areas where there isn’t ‘agreement’ jar on my senses of it. I much prefer the source transcriptions, which make for better dance music…
