The Goat’s Polka
This tune is from the Doon Ceili Band; it is on their new CD "Around the World for Sport." I learned it from Liz Carroll at Fiddletunes 2007; it was nameless until I came across the Doon CD. Fun to play, and a little less goofy than your average polka. Maybe.
And the Doon got it from…
I got the Goat’s Polka from Limerick box player Helen Gubbins and I taught it to the Doon for our album. Helen says whe learned it from her teacher in Limerick when she was younger.
That’s funny that Liz Carroll taught it at Fiddletunes because Helen went to Fiddletunes with me and Django Amerson in 2004 and that’s where I first heard her play this tune at a session upstairs in 204 (the session/dance building)!
Thanks, dadgadguy. I wondered about the origins of the tune; thought it might have been written by one of you Doon folks. I like the fact that it has been wandering around the world for a while.
Fiddletunes is an extraordinary place. What you can learn there is only limited by your ability to function without sleep. ;-)
By the way, Doon rocks!

This is a great tune that I got from Liz Carroll, although I don’t know the author. Although it is in b minor, the second part works really well with a G chord at the beginning of the part.
