The Harlequin, X:2

This version is from the playing of Denis Murphy. It was recorded by him on 19th Nov 1948 (by Seamus Ennis for Radio Eireann). It’s on the CD of his music "Music from Sliabh Luachra" published by RTE, track 14. Its followed by The Chancellor, better known as Father Dollard’s

Re: The Harlequin/ The Chancellor

IMHO this tune ought to be called The Chancellor. Why? Because Padraig O’Keeffe gave a pupil of his this tune with that name. See http://port.itma.ie/score/ITMA_4341 (The original manuscript can also be viewed on the ITMA site. )
My guess is on the 1948 recording of Denis Murphy playing this tune (followed by Father Dollards aka The Harlequin) the names of the tunes got reversed, as sometimes happens. (Denis most likely learnt the tune from POK.) Interestingly Johnny O’Leary’s book gives The Harlequin and The Chancellor as alternatives for Fr Dollard’s, as does this site. The names of later recordings have likely followed from Denis Murphy’s naming "error".
Beginish also called this tune The Chancellor

The Chancellor, X:3

This setting is based on Beginish’s playing. It is pretty close to Padraig O’Keeffe’s setting especially the first part. They picked it up from Johnny O’Leary but I don’t think the tune is in his book.
