Singing Kettle

Liz Carroll taught this in a workshop in Tucson, Arizona in March 2007. Jerome Colburn transcribed it from the recording I made at the workshop. She couldn’t remember the name at the time but thanks to the group here on the session, that mystery was solved, as well as identifying Sean Ryan as the composer.

I have been playing it followed by The Harvest Moon.

Liz had some other variations that I didn’t learn at the time, and unfortunately, didn’t record.

Great Tune

Learned this reel from Mike Dugger. It is one of my favorites at the moment. Always wondered where it came from since a tune search turned up nothing

Re: The Singing Kettle

Somebody said, in the comments of the above video, that it is a Jimmy McHugh composition.
From my point of view, the first part of this reel is reminiscent of Brendan McGlinchey’s Splendid Isolation.

Ooops !

I am afraid that my last comment does not apply to this tune but to the preceding one* in the eponymous set from the album of Emma Sweeney ! I apologize !

Re: The Singing Kettle

The Singing Kettle is a composition of fiddler Sean Ryan.
It is the title track of a Chulrua record (follow the recordings link)
where it is played as a solo by Patrick Orceau (in a set with another S. Ryan tune).
It also appears in “Sean Ryan’s Dream” the second volume of the compositions of Sean Ryan.
