Le Capitaine du 22è Régiment (The Captain of the 22nd Regiment)

Another excellent broken rhythm reel from Quebec. This one follows on from, and makes a good set with, the tune “Cédulie” (tune #7879) that I posted yesterday. The composer was a French-Canadian fiddle-player Louis Boudreault (1905-1988), and more details are in my comments on “Cédulie”.
This tune is posted as being in G minor. Perhaps it should be in B-flat, but that option isn’t available for posted tunes here. Anyway, G minor is actually suitable because the B-part starts in that key and the tune can easily be arranged in the final bar to finish in G minor if so desired.
The bar structure of this tune is unusual for those used to the “standard” 8+8 bar format. Here, the A-part has 10 bars, and the B-art has 5, both with a mixture of time signatures.
The E-nat in the last bar of the A-part (both in the 1st and 2nd time bars) may seem unusual to some players, who may perhaps feel inclined to change it to E-flat, but I think that would quite spoil the mischievous and quirky melodic structure of this tune.

Beautiful piece, just like Cédulie. Keep ‘em comin’, mate! 🙂
