The Rose Of Raby by Dave Shepherd

This is a popular tune written by Dave Shepherd, the fiddler from Blowzabella. It can be danced as either a mazurka or a slow waltz.

This tune was written as part of a suite that Blowzabella was commissioned to write by East Midlands Arts, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Stoke Field 1487. This was in fact the last battle of the Wars of the Roses (not Bosworth Field, as most history books tell us).

It is recorded as part of this suite on Blowzabella’s 1988 album “A Richer Dust”.

This is a lovely mazurka.

Unfortunately it doesn’t fit the range of a G ocarina (and barely fit the range of the C ocarina), so I’ll have to play it in Amin.
