Fifteen comments

A composition of mine, previously called the dinner reel because I wrote it during dinner. I know we’re not supposed to post our own compositions but I submitted 5 tunes, following the whole "penance" thing. The second phrase reminds me of Paddy’s Trip to Scotland unfortunately but oh well, with who knows how many millions of tunes there are out there, you’re bound to have similarities.

I’m not sure why I named it "After the Storm" instead but I think it’s probably because it sounds better than "The Dinner", and the tune makes me think of how I feel when storms are over (I hate storms.)

It used to have more triplets but I was afraid that might make it harder. I play whistle, so I don’t know what is playable on fiddle, banjo, accordion, etc. If any part gives you too much trouble on your instrument, feel free to mess around.

That is, make it a little more suitable for your instrument (preferably without changing the melody too much)

Whoops… Forgot to take out the second ending of the first phrase when I took out most of those triplets.. Sorry about that.

Unless it’s changed, don’t use the sheet music… Sorry about that (again).

Nice tune

I really enjoyed this. I was surprised it was an original tune, it has a very traditional feel to it, good job!

I quite like this one, although it has more of the feel of a hornpipe than a reel. Why not post the original version with the triplets? I bet that would make a great hornpipe.

Thanks, I’m glad to know it sounds like a trad tune.
Here’s the original version with the triplets:

You can try it like a hornpipe if you want, I can see what you mean. I’m just more fond of reels than I am of hornpipes but either way it works.

Hmm, I think my point was that hornpipes and reels are structured differently on a melodic level. It’s about where the accents come in the bar. You could play this fast and straight like a reel, but that wouldn’t necessarily make it a reel. A reel isn’t simply a fast hornpipe. If you play it fast like a reel, you’re just playing a fast hornpipe.

Had some of it wrong, sorry!
And it does sound like a hornpipe to me. I still prefer it as a reel but play it how you think it should be played

I have learned it today with an accordion…
really a good reel! I love it!:)

Dear JosephC!
I just happen to stumble across your tune.
I think it’s very lovely and a pleasure to play. Thanks a lot for sharing it with the world.
