Swedish waltz

This is not a waltz from the beginning. The tune is mostly played and danced like a polska, a swedish couple-dance in slower 3/4. I have heard the tune as a Boda-style polska, with a special kind of rhythm. Sometimes it is played like a hambo, another swedish tune/couple-dance.

What’s with this "second setting"? It’s the Äppelbo gånglåt, and only the first strain.

Trollpolska efter Hans Börtas, Rättvik.

I’ve added another setting, being a familiar one from the playing of Hans Börtas (Börtas Hans) who was a riksspelman from Rättvik in Dalarna. He also played in Dalaföreningens Spelmanslag in Stockholm ( a spelmanslag formed by Dalarna fiddlers living in the city) and was heard playing with them on the radio in the 1940s through to the 60s. Hans Börtas died in 2007 at the age of 94.

It’s certainly not a waltz.

Trollpolska, X:6

Setting for mouth whistling and still in one of the most common keys in a standard Irish Trad session.

In the higher octave of Bm with chords.

Re: Trollpolska

I agree! Not a waltz - it’s a polska. The difference is that the strong beats are on ONE and THREE. Also- from dance notes - "Anticipate start notes (on ONE) using the previous note (on THREE) almost as a grace note. " Of course, since it’s in 3/4, it CAN be played as a waltz.

I’m attaching a couple of U tube demos. The instrumental demos show the beats clearly. Unfortunately, the dance class demo is a different polska, but it still illustrates the dance well.

Re: Trollpolska

Sorry - I seem to have attached a SCHOTTISH video. I’ll see if I can find the right one.
