My first submission :)

A tune that i love… McGoldrick often plays this tune before Lochaber Badger… You can hear and see it in the last transatlantic sessions here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVztCC37wlc

My transcription is probably not perfect… I play low D since less than 3 month and whistle since 6 month, and it’s the first time I write music :)

Enjoy !

I play both tunes on Irish flute with a guitar and piano backing and it sounds quite good ( but rubbish compared to Fred Morrison or Mike Mcgoldrick )

fantastic tune

To my mind these two tunes although quite different are so related. There is something very similar in the structure of the two, the climbs and the falls of the melody.

Guitar Chords

Hi, folks!

Indeed, a truly magnificent piece of art. If somebody posted guitar chords for this tune, that would be great! ;)

Thanks in advance!

General admiration

first heard this tune on transatlantic sessions 3, missed the name and must of spent the next three weeks looking for the name of it. Thank God RTE has an archive.

Composer

is this a trad tune or was it written by Fred?

A couple of things i found out today….

i was looking at a fred morrison cd today and he calls ‘farewell to uist’ ~ ‘leaving uist’…and i was told that he wrote both tunes: leaving uist and lochaber badger

top tunes :o)

Farewel to Uist

Such a stunning tune!!! I do it as a solo fingerstyle guitar piece and use DADGAD tuning - capo’d at c5 so that puts it in Gmin and play it as a set - Farewell to Uist / Rowing from Islay to Uist/ A Journey On The Lochmor (Turas San Lochmar) (learned from Julie Fowlis).

Guitar chords for Farewell might be
Em | Em | Dadd9 | A/C# | G/D | A/C# | Em/B | Aadd9 |
Dadd9 | Em | D/F# | G | G | Dadd9 | Em | Aadd9
Em | Em | Dadd9 | A/C# | G/D | A/C# | Em/B | Aadd9 |

Dadd 9 = xx0230 A/C# = x42200 G/D = xx0433
Em/B = x22000 Aadd9= x02200 D/F# =2x023x

Play Em as power chord - 022400. Do the same for G=3x0033

Bob

Chord shapes given by Bob…

are in standard tuning, not DADGAD, in case anyone is at all confused!

Posted by .

Haha - it is only on a folk music website that anyone would even think of clarifying that!

Yes, you’re right about that, No Cause! Actually, I only did it because Bob mentioned playing it in DADGAD and someone might be confused—especially beginners who would produce some "interesting" harmonies using those chord shapes with DADGAD tuning! :)

Posted by .

Good point there that man. I hadn’t even considered that.

Yes, while I play it in DADGAD, I knew the DADGAD chords would confuse so I used standard tuning shapes for the chords. Thanks for pointing it out! BTW - such a stunning tune when played slowly and with some nice ornaments.

Tuning

what key of whistle does fred use when playing this

Tuning again

how would you put this into the key of A

"how would you put this into the key of A"

Get yourself a whistle in E is the easiest way.

Dots

I think this does the timing a bit closer to "as played"

Fred Morrison Version

I’m showing Fred’s first time through for the recorded version complete with all ornaments I can hear although the slides (and there are many of them) don’t show up in this software. I wish there were a neater way to show cuts.

Re: Farewell To Uist

Here’s a simpler set of chords:
G Em Am C, Em Bm Am7 Em,
G Em Am C, Em Bm Em Am
C Am D G, C Bm Am7 Em
G Em Am C, Em Bm Em Am

It’s all down to taste. De gustibus, as the man said.

Leaving Uist, X:5

With a few alterations and to include lovely tonguing action in bars 17 & 18.
