Here is a self-composed tune

Oh EXCELLENT dan! ๐Ÿ™‚

May the rate its popularity increases be in constant proportion to the number of people who like it!

What so if three people like it then it’s popularity is e^3?

e^3 >20…that’s pretty good!

I’d love that…it’d be global in a matter of weeks!

Can you tell i’ve JUST finished my C3 exam? Btw…a very happy birthday to Joe CSS who is 18 years old today….

Posted .

I see you three have started your own little mutual appreciation society… ๐Ÿ˜€

While music is ‘math’ in the celestial way of things, please, please, don’t destroy melody with math… Math can both find solutions and improve life, and it can also take us to the edge of extinction and threaten to throw us over… ๐Ÿ˜‰

โ„ฆ โˆž

I so wanted to add a pi sign as the heading to that, but I don’t think the yeller board allows such things?

Oh but ceo, how can you be sure that we are not the same person in three guises?

A happy birthday to Joe (for yesterday) and an advanced warning for Dan’s birthday on the seventeenth! You two are going to be all growed up!

Penblwydd Hapus Joe-C ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ˜Ž ~ Well, let’s just say you each have your own way with words as well as having your way with music…

"You two are going to be all growed up!" ~ mehitabel23

Wishful thinking Mehitabel…

Just coz we are pi times as young as you are ceo doesn’t mean we’re not growed up!! ๐Ÿ˜›

pi-eyed?! Just promise me, don’t fully pickle your liver… It’s OK that you will always be a ‘boy’, a ‘lad’, it is the nature of our gender, or so I’m told (by women!)… ๐Ÿ˜‰

i’d say dan’s liver is very un-pickled…less so than mine is anyway.

You have to lay off the vinegar mehitabel…

it just so happens that i don’t drink alchol!!

And you know i didn’t mean pi-eyed! ๐Ÿ˜›

i meant just coz we’re more than three times (or 3.141592654…whichever way you look at it) younger than you doesn’t mean we’re not gonna be gron up!

Speaking of Vinegar…i’ll attempt to put the Vinegar Reel by Jon Boden up soon…it’s such a mint tune for the fiddle!

Posted .

"gron up" ~ somehow I’m not worried… Keep the childlike and curb the childish and you should do alright…

I’m glad you are alcohol free, that means I can stop worrying… One promising young musician with the shakes is one too many… ๐Ÿ˜

Can I just clarify, someone who’s at least pi*my age, and considering "olachan" means "drunk" or "drunkard"…

Doe, a beer, a mexican beer, Ray, the bloke who buys me beer….

"ceolachan" ~ the primary means to get me high!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Howdy Mehitabel, as you’re into clarity ~ ‘ceolachan’ ~ I was called that with the meaning that I get high, drunk, on music… While I enjoy the ‘taste’, having been truly ‘pis*ed’ only once at the hands of a devious friend for whom that was his intention, I have no wish to ever repeat that. I am quite fond of single malts and Belgian beers, certain Russian and Polish vodkas, etc. ~ and my favourite take in an evening in dear ol’ Eire was one pint of the black stuff and one shot of Jameson’s Crested Ten. That would do me fine for the whole night, until the sun rose the next morning. Yeah, I also quite appreciate good Poteen, but not to excess. And I also appreciate some Mexican brews, including lager with lime and Margaritas ~ but in doses that keep enough sense about me that I can still taste it.

The best highs for me, and I also like good fruit juice and other non-intoxicating potions, include good music and dance, but first of all, of greatest importance ~ good company… I’d choose that over just about anything, except the company of my own dear wife… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dough, a mix, a mix to bake, bake, to process into bread
Bread, a thing I love to share, share, a simple act of faith ~

~ taking liberties of coures, what’s new, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh yeah, if that extraction wasn’t clear ~ that’s another high ~ baking, and kneading and leaving to rise and waiting for a good loaf of bread to break with good friends or a loved one… I even miss the act of churning my own butter…mmmm!!!

thanks for your clarification ceo. I am also a fan of the potions of dance, music and song, and of course spiritual intoxication (much fun and much good for your health), the potions of love, good company, of speaking magical languages and of tracing footsteps back to the birthplace of mankind.

But I also like a couple of beers on friday nights.

(I am a particular fan of a rather marvellous brew called "rucking mole")

"me, the girl, he buys it for, far, a long way to the bar
so, I’ll have another beer, la, la la la la la la…
tea? no thanks I’ll have a beer, and that brings us back to doe, doe, doe, doe…

Wow, I didn’t know that Rucking Mole had won a prestigous Gold Medal. It is very nice. I normally have it in a cute little pub in Salisbury as a bit of light relief after a classical concert at the cathedral. Thank you ceo for providing me with more information about my favourite beer!

if you give me your address i will pour some rucking mole in an envelope and mail it to you.

๐Ÿ˜€ ~ I’ll have to just ‘ferret’ it out…

Great to see that there are some more mathematician folkies out there. Ceolachan- "maths", not "math". :-p Maths and music are very nicely mixed- take the band 422 for example.

One day I plan to write "The Complex Reel", naturally with real and imaginary parts.

How was C3? My brother’s just done his (on OCR) and he said everybody found it hard.

Yeah i did the OCR one and i thought it was very manageable!! But then I like maths. My teacher is very good in that she blends C4 in with C3 so we are better at maths by the time the exams come up! Trust me, it works!

Yeah you should deffo write the Complex Reel…if only there existed a note j…write it in J major if you can ๐Ÿ™‚

Maths ~ Math ~ plural or singular ~ ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I love maths, honest, but ~ I had some really bad mathematics teachers. As a kid it fascinated me, but, maybe something to do with my species of dyslexia, I somehow worked everything in my head. Also, at the time, we were fed theorems and told nothing about why they worked. That was the way back then, just accept it and move on. I couldn’t, I had to understand it. So, I asked questions, not realizing my teachers hadn’t a clue themselves. Instead of admitting it they just gave me guff. The thing that turned me away was being accused of cheating ~ I always had the right answer. But how could I cheat? Those nearest me often didn’t have the right answer, and back then the only other way was to shove something up your sleeve, hide it in your socks or write it on your wrist or forearm, which I hadn’t. So, I am slowly trying to reconnect to MATH ~ like God rather than gods, I’m monotheistic!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Here’s a recent little gem I found:

"Numbers: The Universal Language"
New Horizons, Thames & Hudson

I also like:

"Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers"
by Jan Gullberg
Norton & Company

In my work to reconnect I started out with some great primary texts, literally, borrowed from my wife, and worked through a ton of great textbooks for children. Sadly the schools don’t always have the money or the inclination, but math teaching has improved tenfold from when I was a kid, the books were a charm. I actually worked through at least three different systems, in part reviewing them. The most expensive was actually the best amongst these new releases.

I am now planning to hit GCSE maths and physics next. Wish me luck… It just seems a natural interconnection, music and math, like barley and beer… ๐Ÿ™‚

"gron up" ~ somehow I’m not worried

Stop pasting spelling mistakes to make an issue out of it it’s really annoying.

Posted .

I’m open to other recommended reads from you denizens of the realm. Any guidance in my study(ies) is welcome… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh, you mean that minor thing, ‘gron’ (Gronland ~ the Danish name for Greenland)… It’ s just good to know I’m not alone… I would be worried though if something so minor winds you up. That was not the intention. Now I know you are sensitive in that area, one I can’t afford to be, though it does bother me, I will avoid ‘annoying’ you. With some of the real injustices this planet and our species is capable of, I would think there are more important things to be annoyed about… ๐Ÿ˜

i wasn’t bothered by seeing it once…i was browsing through other comments on other tunes and discussions and you seem to do it a lot there as well…THAT is what got up my tree…and also the fact that I hate exams is prob why i’m sounding so ratty!

Posted .

" ~ you seem to do it a lot there as well…"

Had I? Hmmm… I have always been awful with exams. My memory doesn’t work on demand, so when I want an answer, I sometimes have to wait. I do feel for you on the exam side and wish you the best. As said, I don’t do things to wind folks up, generally, and tend to only ‘tease’ people I’ve had some interaction with. I never tease someone I don’t like or don’t feel some empathy for, like those struggling with exams, but things change and when I find I’ve upset someone, well, I do my best to avoid doing so, sorry… I’ll be leaving your ‘tree’ now and take note to avoid future possible conflict…

Good luck with your exams…

‘sispipwer’ ~ ?

I know you don’t mean to annoy people! Sorry! By all means let’s have a friendly conflict….just let’s have it after i’ve finished my exams! Dan

‘swisspiper’ and ‘gm’ are considered ‘friends’. We have had a lot of interaction over music, including appreciating that tune that was recently submitted. I often call him ‘swisspiper’ ‘swiss pirate’, and I rattle both their cages now and again, but they know it is done with appreciation and respect ~ for each one’s own particular madness and passion… ~ but now I feel like I’m having to explain myself and my actions, and that is always a bad sign. I guess I wasn’t completely down from the tree yet. It is damned high up here ~ but I think I see a deep part of the stream this overhands, and I’m a pretty good swimmer… Step to the side, I don’t want to catch you and risk any damage as I jump ~ GERONIMO!!!

‘overhands’ "gulp!" should have read ‘overhangs’ ~ "blub, blub!" The current has me ~ ~ ~ ~

Ceo, you are fantastic at seguing very smoothly. I didn’t even notice you had change the subject during your post, and it wasn’t until inspection revealed the first line to be " ‘swisspiper’ and ‘gm’ are considered ‘friends’ " and the final to be "Step to the side, I don’t want to catch you and risk any damage as I jump" that I realised that you would make a good politician. You’re not a politician, are you?

Ceolachan- any good maths ‘popular science’ books may or may not be slightly beyond you if you’re planning to take a GCSE in it, but in general I’d recommend "The Music of the Primes", "The Magical Maze" and "The Infinite Book".

Maths is plural unless you’re just stating one axiom/something derived from it in only one logical step.

I wish you and anyone else with exams luck.

Good luck to all with exams!

May the force be with dow!

well i just failed my statistics S2 retake AND S3…finished em about 20 mins ago ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Stats isn’t real maths- It sucks. I only did S1! Your school making you do S3 is harsh.

well i’m doing maths and further maths so i have to do them otherwise i won’t have enough modules to get two good A-levels which may be a good thing coz i can collect the best results i have to form an A for just one A level of maths as opposed to trying to get two A levels worth!

Posted .

Sure- I did further as well, but did C1-4, FP1-3, M1-4, S1 and D1
I did one extra one because the school tried to replace M4 with D1 because it was easier, but then we did M4 anyway.

Are you going to uni next year then?

i want to and i’ve got AAA offers but now i’m seriously starting to doubt my ability! Yeah i did D1 last year and did OK. Now i have to choose between M3 FP2 S4 or D2! Any opinions on those modules i see you’ve done some of em!

I think i’ll stop playing my violin so much then i may have time to actually study!

Posted .

In this order starting with the best-
M3, FP2, D2 and S4.

That said, FP2 is probably more useful than M3, depending on what you want to do with it.

Where/what are you hoping to go to/do at uni? Durham for maths I hope :p, so that you can join the folk society… (

He’s Newcastling to do Law (sorry if that was a secret Dan)

I bet you’re doing fabulously in your exams (Dan’s a smart cookie, really he is!)

Do M3 or D2!!!

Hey Martin I’m close to your request!

Durham is my first choice to do Law…Newcastle (THANKS Abby ๐Ÿ˜›) is my second…so I won’t be far away I guess/hope..I’ve just gotta see if Durham give me an offer! Though if I don’t get AAA i’ll prob retake my second year.

Posted .

And Martin your ginger like me!

Posted .

OMG dan RETAKE YOUR SECOND YEAR!!! Then we can be at uni together!!! (unless I end up in Saskatchwen (please no) or Hong Kong, which is unlikely but not impossible)

martin, you know patrick? awesome! i also met ffion very briefly but only to tell her that I’m applying to her old school…and you like blowzabella???? i have lived off it since i became discontent with my family’s electronica beats at the age of seven. small world!

My best wishes are still holding for you Dan, fingers and toes crossed, and that you get your choice of uni too. Don’t completely lay off the music though, that’s a false worry. Some folks I’ve known in maths and sciences wouldn’t have survived without their musical passions an involvements in toe, to help keep them level and ‘in the groove’… As it is law you’re shooting for, well, I suspect stats might come to some use in the future, depending on where your focus your energies…

No Martin, I’m forcing myself to do reviews, literally starting from the bottom and the origins… I have no intention of resitting an exam, I just wanted to cover early ground again and go a step at a time. It has been a very long time since I was anywhere around a maths textbook. Thanks for the recommended reads, appreciated. I’ll check them out…

Ceo - Dan’s choosing Durham/Newcastle because of the wicked folk scenes.

No fear of him laying off the music! More fear of him laying off the law ๐Ÿ˜›

True mehitabel!

But i may have to loosen up a bit until i finish in June that means i prob won’t be getting or at least playing a low/high whistle (if i bought one) until exams are finished….drastic but necessary!

Posted .

I suspected as much mehitabel, wise man! Keep your music always at your side Dan, in your ears, hands and heart…

and in your oesophagus

"small world!" mehitabel23

It is the folk world we’re talking about here!

I guess everybody knows everybody really! (and everybody collaborated with everybody - and if Simpson/Cutting is an alleged disaster…what hope is there for the rest of us?)

Dan, please don’t lay of the music!! I will be very sad!

Haahahahaha - I’ve just been reading these comments again, a year and a half on, and laughing at how things have actually turned out, compared to what we were imagining and fantasising about back then!

ABBY has gone to the United World College of the Atlantic in Llantwit Major, Wales (not on the Atlantic, more like the Bristol Channel, but oh well). It’s a 6th-form college where everyone’s ever so cultural and interesting, and they do the International Baccalaureate instead of A-levels. She is now entering her second and final year.

DAN didn’t quite flunk his A-levels, but he most certainly did not get the AAA he mentioned here! But, regardless of that, he is now starting his second year in Manchester Uni, studying Law and Criminology, and playing in sessions with such great names as Michael McGoldrick, Grace Kelly, John Joe Kelly and Dezi Donnely!

I, on the other hand, did flunk my A-levels! I didn’t get into any university, and so I took a year out, spending 6 insane weeks in America and 6 weird-as-hell-but-really-good months in Israel. Now I’m off back to America to start at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA!

Maybe I’ll report back here in another year and a half - who knows what I’ll be writing then??

Good luck in Boston - you’ll have a great time there. Say hello to all the crew in the Boston sessions. I’ve never been there but say hello anyway.

I’ll say, "Dow says hello", and they’ll all know what I mean, right?
