The Stonemason

This is the beauty of not abandoning cassette tape technology. A cassette turned up on eBay last year called “The Stonemason”, featuring Sharon Shannon, Kevin Griffin, Michel Bonamy, Eoin O’Neill and Niall Sheedy.
I’ve a feeling it might have been recorded to sell at gigs or sessions for tourists round about Doolin some years back. As far as I know, it’s only been released as a cassette, and there’s some lovely playing on it.
This jig starts off a set played solo by Kevin Griffin on banjo, and I took a liking to it. Never come across the tune anywhere else, so hopefully some of you might like to pick it up, and resurrect it.

This tune is in fact a composition of Kevin Griffin. He named it after his father. I heard it from a tape from a Clare FM radio show sometime around the early 90s. It was just Kevin on banjo, backed by Eoin O’Neill on bouzouki.

… from 6/8 to 3/4, this tune can be almost effortlessly tweaked into a waltz or mazurka. Nice too.
