Martin Collection No 2: This is a Highland transcribed by Dr Donald Martin Killybegs from the playing of musicians in the South Donegal area. It is one of a series which I hope to upload. The New Row was number 1. Because I have no names for most of them I will use the title “Martin Collection No X” until someone with greater knowledge than I can supply a proper name.

Jenny’s Bawbee

Thanks, ceolachan, for presenting this tune is various ways.

From Herd’s Ancient and Modern Scots Songs (1776):

And a‘ that e’er my Jenny had,
My Jenny had, my Jenny had,
And a‘ that e’er my Jenny had,
Was ae bawbee.

There’s your plack and my plack,
And your plack and my plack,
And my plack and your plack,
And Jenny’s bawbee.

We’ll put it in the pint stoup,
The pint stoup, the pint stoup,
We’ll put it in the pint stoup,
And birl’t a’ three.

A “bawbee” was equivalent to one halfpenny sterling, a “plack” (or “groat”), one farthing sterling; a stoup was a tankard.

Polly Put The Kettle On, X:7

Here is another version of Jenny’s Bawbee from the Athole Collection (1884) in which this tune is listed as a reel.
