Le Fette De Village

Here is a tune from Lancashire, England, that I heard at a session on friday and thought “what a good tune” so here it is submitted as I remember it!!

I think it may be a morris dance but I’m not sure.

La Fête de Village…

…would be the correct spelling!

I can’t do clever little circumflexes 🙁

Circumflexes

Just hold down the ALT key while you press the 136 keys on the numeric keypad and voilà!

Flippin’ Heck!!

Pressing 136 keys on the keyboard! I haven’t got time to be pressing that many all the time! 😛

J’ai mal à la tête!

Barry Dransfield

This tune appears on Barry Dransfield’s 1994 recording ‘Be your own Man’. It’s played before ‘A Hornpipe’ and ‘Miss Sackville’s Fancy’. Barry adds, in the c.d. liner notes, that they came from the collection of dance and church musician William Mittell of New Romney, Nr Rye, E. Sussex.

Re: La Fête De Village

Is also used in Bellowheads Frogs legs and Dragons teeth (The frogs legs bit anyway)

“Le Fête Du Village”

I picked this one up from the playing of “The Lakeland Fiddlers” and have transcribed their take on it here in 4/4. For comparison I’ll also show the same transcription in 2/4 (X: 2)… You can find a performance of this on their CD: “The Lakeland Fiddlers: One Big Fiddle”, track 6 -

From the notes for this CD: Another tune from the Winder manuscript - - - the family manuscript of the Winders of Wyresdale in North Lancashire - - -

I have yet to find this melody in another collection and would welcome any help in directing me to other sources for it…

Re: Le Fête Du Village

It’s also in a collection from South England. Can’t remember which, possibly Thomas Hardy or a collection from Hastings? "Winders of Wyresdale book ( over 600 tunes!) available here.. Www.andyhornby.net/Winders.html

Re: Le Fête Du Village

I think it was played in a film about the Bounty mutiny by Barrie Dransfield.

Re: Le Fête Du Village

And Barrie Dransfield used to live in Hastings.

Re: Le Fête Du Village

Thanks to Andy Hornby and the link he has provided, including for the ABCs, this tune is listed under ‘Hornpipes’ in the Winder collection, but the structure still seems to have a bit of the barndance/schottische about it…
