Six comments

Chieftans

The Chieftans recorded this… and it was most likely made famous by Uncle Dave Macon on the Grand Ol Opry… but the tune has other history and forms that probably predate the popularity of Uncle Dave’s version.

Paddy Maloney

I think Paddy had some comments about this tune and a similar Irish tune he felt related, but I cant remember what he said and can’t find any info on that.

Variations

I dont remember where I learned this tune, but have heard many variations on the first part: One is much more complex:

Song

I think the Chieftans did it as a song… but it has history as both instrumental and song.

I believe Uncle Dave did it in the key of D, in G it was called Jawbone and was strictly a fiddle tune.

There is a nice version of this tune with "New Deal String Band" on the album "Dealing a New Hand (From The Same Old Deck)"
