The Spy Czar Hornpipe By Liz Carroll

I just saw Liz Carroll & John Doyle in concert and was inspired to transcribe this, a most crazy, tune. It’s off their CD “In Play.” It is in A harmonic minor, and that with the frequent triplet arpeggios give it an Eastern European flavor, to me anyway. There is also a crazy “Tag” after the second repeat of the tune, and it goes like this:

A|EAcA (3ABc d2|(3 EAc (3ecA EAB^G|EAce agfe|(3gfe dc BA^GF|
EAcA (3ABc d2|(3 EAc (3ecA EAB^G|(3DFA (3dAF EB,^GB,| A,2AE A3A|
(3E2A2c2 (3B2^G2F2|(3E2A2c2 (3B2^G2F2|EAce agfe|(3gfe dc BA^GF|
(3EAc (3eae fd- dE/E/|(3EAc (3eac‘ d’b- bD/D/|(3DFA (3dAF EB,^GB,|A,2e|]

A couple quick notes: The 2nd bar of the B-part the (^ga) should probably be played as a slide, I play Banjo and slides don’t actually work, so . . .
And the final note e is “plucked” pizzicatto style.

Enjoy.

Dontcha just love these pure-drop, hardcore-traditional-Irish tunes, just like this one? Tunes that… well, you play them, and you can almost smell the peat they grew out of, feel the reassuring, spiritual weight of the thousands of old musicians who played them before you, hundreds of years into the past, hear the patter of the myriad feet that have danced to it on some wooded planks laid down on the floor of somebody’s barn. Tunes that you can’t help but think were taught to humans by the Faeries in return for the shepherd’s beautiful daughter….

Joe you got it!

(not a hornpipe obviously)

JoeCSS, you know they have thousand league long peatbogs in Czarland? And wooden barns and chalets applenty! 😉Perhaps this beauty was composed in a marbled Chateau, though, by some lily white handed member of the Czarocracy?
Who composed this lovely tune does anyone know?

Odin (from heaven?) writes to us:
<I’m seeing your comment just now on this tune. It was composed by Liz Carroll and is a hornpipe.>
Thanks for the info. So I was wrong: it is a hornpipe after all. And I was right; it was written by a member of the aristocracy!

Re: The Spy Czar

This is an outstanding hornpipe by Liz Carroll. I play it on harmonica. It’s a great tune to improvise.
