Wot’s a Sea Hound?

What is or was the Sea Hound, and what was it doing in your company?

I think we should be told.

A Sea-Hound is a dog with fins that helped me fish Sea-Ant Eaters around Aliuarssik area.

Re: When The Sea Hound Left Me

Also known as scoirneach or madra glas in Irish.
The English name refers to the fact that it is believed to hunt in packs, like hounds. It is known to congregate in large numbers all right but this may have something to do with seasonal -i.e. mating- behaviour.
The latin name ‘Mustelus spp.’ (a stoat) refers to its slender body and tail (and its pointy teeth)
You can see them on the fishmongers’ stall sometimes but I was lucky to see one close up in Donegal once. It had been lying still for at least half an hour before I noticed it. Left behind on a ramp by a fisherman. I got closer to release it back into the water or perhaps to take it home with me for my dinner…
Its beautiful (nictitating!) cat eyes were something to behold! Out of this world.
It totally said: release me (I belong somewhere else).
When it went it did so without fuss or hurry. As if nothing life-threatening had happened. It slid back smoothly through the water with slow sideways movements of its tail and disappeared from view (it vanished from my eyes before it went far; blending in with the colour of the rocks and the surface of the calm sea water). As smooth as the weeds.

Re: When The Sea Hound Left Me

There are many species of ‘sea-hounds’ in the world. The most common in Irish and Scottish waters is the smooth hound
(Mustelus asterias)

Re: When The Sea Hound Left Me

(Not all sea hounds are fish, I hear.
Some sea hounds have sea legs)

Re: When The Sea Hound Left Me

I’d like to know what Peter Morrison’s story it, though.
I certainly love the tune, it seems to have that undulating movement in it…
I wonder was it a she-sea hound?

Re: When The Sea Hound Left Me

Also reminds me of a Luz Carroll tune…
was it the Setting sun?
