"Talpiau Pwdin" ~ National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1785

One of three Llangadfan dances notated in a manuscript, music and dances, in the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth… In the handwritten source for this, the earliest with regards to this dance and tune in Cymru/Wales, the title is given in English. The manuscript is dated from a letter, 1785. The author shows a clear awareness of the dance notation of the period, despite some ideas to the contrary…

Repeats were not given in the music transcription but occur in practice to accompany the dance. The original transcription also has it as 6/4, but modern practice is to notate it as 6/8, as I’ve given it here, though I know it as being played in the more stately style of 6/4. Besides, there’s not that option here on TheSesh. This dance tune exists in numerous early dance tomes in various states, and as a dance also finishes off "The Beggar’s Opera", 1728. I haven’t my copy of that on hand or I’d add that transcription too, for comparison…
Another ‘correction’ made was to the B-part, measures 3 & 4 which were given in the manuscript with an e instead of how it tends to be played, with the f:

~ | Ace Ace | Ace F2 d | ~ rather than ~ | Acf Acf | Acf F2 d | ~

A piano arrangement of this, the melody line pretty much note-for-note in agreement with the transcription I’ve given, and with repeats, can be found in the following:

"Welsh Dance Tunes" by Hugh Mellor
Published by Cymdeithas Ddawns Werin Cymru /
The Welsh Folk Dance Society
under license from Novello & Co., Ltd., London

I also have this tune somewhere in other forms. This transcription is considerably different from a relative recently submitted, for comparison:

M: 6/4 ~ etc…

The Playford and most early versions of the tune, on the whole, are pretty much in agreement with the manuscript in the National Library of Wales ~ no repeats, M: 6/4 & K: g minor… Any e passing notes picked up work best as e flat…

Robert Burns ~ "Contented Wi’ Little"

Contented Wi’ Little / Contented With Little
http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/translations/contented_wi_little.htm

Contented Wi’ Little

Contented wi’ little and cantie wi’ mair,
Whene’er I forgather wi’ Sorrow and Care,
I gie them a skelp, as they’re creepin alang,
Wi’ a cog o’ guid swats and an auld Scottish sang.

I whyles claw the elbow o’ troublesome Thought;
But Man is a soger, and Life is a faught.
My mirth and guid humour are coin in my pouch,
And my Freedom’s my lairdship nae monarch daur touch.

A towmond o’ trouble, should that be my fa’,
A night o’ guid fellowship sowthers it a’:
When at the blythe end o’ our journey at last,
Wha the Deil ever thinks o’ the road he has past?

Blind Chance, let her snapper and stoyte on her way,
Be’t to me, be’t frae me, e’en let the jade gae!
Come Ease or come Travail, come Pleasure or Pain,
My warst word is:- ’ Welcome, and welcome again!’

There is also an added feature to this dance, in a sense, another dance which follows after these dances and including "Lumps of Pudding". Here are the ABCs for that, just 4-bars, though I’ve also known it with a B-part ~
