I believe..

this tune can be heard on track 15 of Music at Matt Molloys under the title “Set Of Single Jigs Learned From Kevin’s Father (John’s Grandfather)”. I’ve always thought this was a very charming tune. Glad to see it posted!

Funny - I thought I already wrote that when I posted the tune. It is played by Kevin McHugh himself, together with his son, John. The tune which comes after it is the other Kevin McHugh’s Jig which was posted a few days ago.

I tried to post this one as Kevin McHugh’s #2 to avoid confusion, but for some reason the suffix disappeared.

Kevin McHugh’s (single jig)

This would have been better transcribed in 6/8 I think.

Our resident flute-guru at the session (Stuart) likes to play a simpler variation of this. The extended holds give it a more bouncy feel.

Tom Cawley’s from Johnny McGreevy

Cawley is featured on a pair of acetates cut in NYC in the 50s with fluter/fiddler Jim McGowen. A 78 of Francis Cashin and Tom Cawley is included on the Milestone at the Garden tape/CD.

This is my take of McGreevy’s playing of this jig.

Kevin McHugh’s Jig(s)

For some reason two measures are missing from the abc/sheet music from the tune offered by bdh above. It’s fine in his posting but the two measures at the end of part A went missing in the version at the top of the page.

Paddy Keenan Version

From the playing of Paddy Keenan

Re: Kevin McHugh’s

X3 is a totally different tune to X1 and X2.

Re: Kevin McHugh’s

Totally different? It’s the same tune, altough with a slightly different take in the opening bars. Something that any trad musician could play as a variation.

Re: Kevin McHugh’s

Ok Gottcha , maybe I jumped the gun - thanks. Am I correct to say that x2 above has the bar lines in the wrong places. Surely there should be more bar lines ie after each 2 sets of 3 notes?
