The Lounge Bar

I learnt this tune at Folkworks this year, from the awesome and legendary Catriona MacDonald. She did tell us who wrote it, but unfortunately, I can’t remember. Another Shetland fiddler, I think. It is apparently named after a pub in Shetland where all the best sessions happen.

Yup, definitely ‘Folkworks’… ;-)

Are you insinuating something, Ceolachan?

Composer

This great tune is on Sarah-Jane Summers’ Album ‘Nesta’ and I believe it is written by Annlaug Børsheim

This great tune is also on the second Hazelius Hedin album, ‘Sunnan’ (2014). Yes, it was composed by Annlaug Børsheim, a Norwegian folk musician (Hardanger fiddle, guitar, voice).

Re: The Lounge Bar

The composer plays the tune in D major, format: AB AB CB AB CB

Re: The Lounge Bar

This beautiful tune should, I think, be played with a dotted feel and not too fast. Ross Couper and Tom Oakes take it in the mid 90s bpm.

Re: The Lounge Bar

Comparing the score in D with the video, there’s a lot more syncopation going on than is notated. I don’t do ABC but could have a crack at trying to transcribe it. Btw, these 2 were at the Edinburgh & Lothians TMSA "Northern Streams Festival" a few years back, and what a delight it was to have them!

The Lounge Bar, X:3

This is roughly how The Lounge Bar is played in the YouTube linked to above. As Trish mentions, a bit more syncopated than in the other settings.
