Danzig Willie

I *think* it’s in 9/8, but it almost feels like a 3/4. A tune by the Scots singer/song writer/instrumentalist Brian McNeill. I’ve only heard this tune on two recordings; the Battlefield Band with Alison Kinnard album, Music in Trust Vol. 2, and Horses for Courses by Brian McNeill and Tom McDonagh. It’s a fun little tune and reminds me a little of Top it Off.

Lots of room for triplets and rolls on this one too. I usually play it in A.

Nice tune, check your email, I find myself playing this as a 3/4 mazurka… Here that take in A Major, since you mentioned that key, and avoiding doing an ‘exact’ transposition of your transcript, so as to show how it fits with a few differences:

X: 2
T: Danzig Willie
M: 3/4
L: 1/8
R: mazurka

Thanks C, I got your email, and you’re probably right. I’m still not 100% comfortable with ABCs, usually takes me an hour or more for a tune.

Marty, try giving it the foot, tapping, and that pulse, on 1 & 3 of 3/4…

You’re right ceolachan. Sorry I didn’t make the edit in time, but thanks for adding it here. I spent Thanksgiving in at my sisters in a little Wyoming town called Torrington on the opposite side of the state from me and I just got back. I should have added when you sent me the forst email but didn’t realize that I wouldn’t be able to change it after I got back. Anyway, thanks for your effort.
Cheers,
Marty

Re: Danzig Willie

“A famous Scots merchant who made his fortune trading with the Baltic” (sleeve notes).

Re: Danzig Willie

I like the Battlefield Band version of this one a lot, but to me it sounds more like a mazurka than a slip jig. The tune following, “The Merchant’s Jig” is most definitely a slip, though.
