Willie Clancy recorded this, or rather, it was field recording that got released on the Folktrax label. I’m not sure if this was recorded in London, but the Folktrax recording is the one with both Bobby Casey and Willie Clancy. Some speculation on this tune was that it was a Charlie Chaplin melody (from one of the films, anyway), and that Willie played it as a joke, or for fun, or whatever.

At any rate, Tommy Keane recorded it, and it’s a nice enough melody!

Willie’s Polka

“Champagne Charlie is my name,
Champagne Charlie is my name,
Champagne Charlie is my name,
And rovin’ and stealin’ is my game.”

Terry Moylan or someone wrote about the recording of Willie singing/playing this in An Piobarie years ago, they thought Willie was singing something like “Sean-pein Charlie is my name, och on” until Alec Finn identified the music hall song.
