A great retreat march by J. Wallace with a bit of history.
The 1st Gordon Highlanders took the Heights in Oct 1897 in the Khyber regio., The Gurkhas tried and were pinned down, but the Gordons, along with the Sikhs took the plateau and a piper wounded in both legs continued to play, and was awarded a VC by Queen Victoria.
Scale
Is it really a tune in Dmaj? Maybe the Mixolydian mode of A is the right scale (?)
A colleague plays this (as a lively dance rather than a lament) after "The Battle of the Somme" https://thesession.org/tunes/2923
He calls in the "Hills of Dargai"
March of the modes
It probably should be A mix (I don’t think too much in modes).
Perhaps the ABC "special" keysig Hp ought to be included in the dropdown as a reminder?
Re: The Heights Of Dargai
There’s a version of this tune which I really like, that is played by the Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia pipe band. It’s the fifth and final tune in a set of 9/8 marches.
