The Old Stage (slide)

Just been looking throuigh the excellent book “300 Tunes from Mike Rafferty’ by Lesl Harker, and came across a slide called “Ta Mo Mhadra”, which is another version of “The Old Stage”. An alternative title is given as “Poor Nancy Died”.

A Sung Version

On the Seamus Begley and Stephen Cooney album, “Meiteal,” there’s a vocal part (in Irish) for the A section – very nice.

…as played by P.J. & Martin Hayes

Similar first part (though down in Em/G), different second part.

…and it’s called here Billy O’Rourke is the Buachaill.

The Old Stage, X:4

A version in Bminor, the key that this is played in by The Gloaming in The Opening Set.

The Old Stage = Paddy Canny’s jig

The only difference being whether it’s considered to be a jig or a slide. I thing that in the Hayes’ album (The Shored of Lough Graney) it’s meant to be a jig. They call it “Billy O’Rourke is the Buachaill”.

Re: The Old Stage /Behind the Bush in the Garden

Julia Clifford gave this name to this tune on a tape recording made in 1974 as well as on the record The Humours of Lisheen

Re: The Old Stage

“An Bóthar ó thuaidh go dtí Árainn” is the name that Breatnach gave this tune that he collected from Michael (Micko) Russell. Presumably it translates as The Road North to Aran.
