The Shetland Bus

Learned from the first La Lugh album. It’s named in honour of the clandestine Norwegian resistance operation in WW II, providing sea transport between Norway and Shetland mostly on fishing boats.

I’ve been playing it for many years but still don’t know who composed it. Anyone?

The Shetland Bus

I think it was composed by Dr. Tom Anderson.

The Shetland Bus

According to the La Lugh album sleeve notes it was written by the great Shetland accordianist and tunesmith Ronnie Cooper, who also wrote ‘Da Tushkar’, ‘Miss Susan Cooper’ etc.

The Shetland Bus

Just a note to confirm what straysider said: this is a composition of Ronnie Cooper which he published in his book "Shetland Music by Ronnie Cooper Vol V" (1974).

The Shetland Bus Service(s)

There is a website specifically about the secret support operation between the Shetland Islands and the Norwegian resistance, which refers to a waltz written to commemorate it. However, it’s nothing like Ronnie Cooper’s, nor - in my opinion - as appealing a tune. There is a link to it: http://shetlandbus.com/audio/mtbwaltz8m.wav . The Cooper tune has been recorded by Sussex band, The Rude Mechanicals: there is a short clip of it at http://www.rudemex.co.uk/audio.html .

Re: The Shetland Bus

It’s a lovely tune and I think needs to be played quite slowly. It’s interesting that all the versions I have seen, and above, are written as not dotted but it always seems to be played mostly dotted. I learned it dotted except bars 13-15 of the A music which were played straight and make a nice contrast.

Re: The Shetland Bus

Ben, it’s easier to read when it’s written straight even if it’s played swung.
The first bar of the second line of the second setting is given as (3GAG FG AG [rather than (3ABA ^GA BA ] in The Ronnie Cooper Collection (pub. 2013).
